How to find out what an item is worth

A useful estimate starts with the right identification. Small differences in model, edition, age, and condition can change what buyers are willing to pay.

1. Identify the exact item

Look for maker names, model numbers, labels, serial numbers, hallmarks, edition marks, and dates. Photograph these details as well as the full item. For collectibles, the exact release or variant may matter as much as the broad category.

2. Describe the condition honestly

Note scratches, chips, missing parts, repairs, discoloration, box or paperwork, and whether the item works. Use clear photos in good light. Compare condition with the items you use as references; “similar” can mean something different when one item is complete and another is damaged.

3. Compare completed sales

Search marketplaces for the exact item and focus on completed or sold listings. Active listings show what sellers hope to receive; completed sales are stronger evidence of what buyers paid. Compare several examples and account for shipping, selling fees, and location.

4. Think in ranges

One sale can be an outlier. A low-to-high range is usually more honest than a precise number because timing, buyer demand, and condition all affect the final price. For rare or expensive pieces, seek a qualified specialist or independent authentication.

Use an estimate as a starting point

Worth It AI can help identify an item from a photo and provide an estimated value range with condition and rarity context. AI results can miss details, so verify the identification and compare recent sales before making a significant purchase or sale. The estimate is informational and is not a formal appraisal or guarantee of sale price.
